Concert Lighting Challenges

A lighting designer needs a variety of tools to make a concert fun to attend by the paying crowd. The designers' greatest desire is to create looks never seen before. This can be achieved through a variety of conventional fixtures and automated fixtures. Having both types of fixtures as part of your lighting rig will cut down on the preparation time for each concert.

Automated fixtures differ in their movement, color options, gobo options and intensity. Movement creates an appeal that is easily seen with or without a light beam because of how the fixture moves. For example, Vari-Lite fixtures have a moving yoke that allows them to rotate 540 degrees and hit the audience as well as the stage and ceiling. On the other hand, some automated fixtures have a mirror that moves, which allows for faster movement. These types are popular for nightclubs where the movement is better faster. In the concert world, moving mirror fixtures can be used as backlighting or on a scrim or backdrop.

Our Lighting Design Technique

Automated color wash luminaires use dichroic color changers which allow for more saturated color than the typical gel filters. Our lighting designers portray the feeling of the song through the colors used. For example, a show that is constantly upbeat with the audience dancing or in a mosh pit, the lights and color are bright. On the other hand, a slow, mello song, will be lit in saturated colors such as dark blue, magenta, teal, purple, etc.

You may be saying, we are a small band with a limited budget. That is okay. A lighting system does not need hundreds of fixtures; it needs enough to achieve the look you want. We, at Myer Lighting, have done concerts, for small bands, with a total of four automated fixtures and about ten conventional fixtures. In fact, with the concert touring industry changing as a result of the Internet and file sharing, more and more bands are relying on smaller systems consisting of about a dozen automated lights and a handful of conventional fixtures.

Prices range according to amount of preparation time and support needed.
